Птица счастья с давних времён была хранительницей семейного счастья и благополучия у русских людей. Изготавливается этот оберег обязательно из дерева (ель, пихта, сибирский кедр), поскольку дерево — самое энергоемкое растение на земле. Основным местом происхождения считается Архангелогородская губерния, в которую до ХХ века входили территории современных Мурманской, Архангельской областей, беломорские районы республики Карелии и Ненецкого автономного округа (Поморье, Поморская сторона).
Птицу подвешивали под потолком в переднем, «красном» углу деревенской горницы, где располагался стол с лавками. Когда на него ставили кипящий самовар, резная птица, повинуясь токам горячего воздуха, медленно и торжественно вращалась вокруг оси.
